Continuing the Campaign Against Executions: From the Streets of Sydney to the White House
In May 2026, as the wave of executions in Iran intensified, advocacy and protest activities against the death penalty entered a new phase. Through a range of grassroots, international, and political initiatives, the members worked to amplify the voices of political prisoners and the Iranian people to a global audience.

No to Executions in Iran
A key focus of these efforts was the ongoing organisation of weekly book tables and public awareness stalls, which this month took on a more solemn and urgent tone. These gatherings coincided with the execution of courageous political prisoners such as Vahid Bani Amerian, Pouya Ghobadi, and Babak Alipour, along with other fellow activists. These political prisoners, now symbols of resistance against repression, stood with extraordinary courage in the face of torture and pressure, ultimately sacrificing their lives for freedom. Participants at these events honoured their memory and called for an immediate halt to executions in Iranhttps://iran-hrm.com/2026/04/04/execution-of-vahid-bani-amerian-and-abolhassan-montazer-the-lethal-cost-of-international-inaction/

Alongside these initiatives, a series of protest and awareness-raising actions were held across various locations, aiming to expose the widespread human rights violations in Iran. These activities were met with strong support from the Iranian diaspora, public and human rights advocates, generating meaningful engagement within the public sphere.
At the academic and civil society level, representatives of the Association actively participated in a number of conferences and forums. These engagements provided an important platform to present documented evidence of the worsening human rights situation in Iran, particularly the rise in executions, and to call for urgent international action.

One of the most significant events of the month took place on Saturday, 16 May, when a large gathering of Iranian-Americans was held in front of the White House. The rally, organised to condemn executions in Iran and support a democratic alternative, brought together thousands of participants and sent a strong message to the international community. Representatives of the Association also attended, joining others in calling for an end to the cycle of violence and repression in Iran. https://www.ncrius.org/beyond-the-mirage-dc-march-rejects-shah-and-mullahs-supports-maryam-rajavis-democratic-alternative.html

In Australia, the support and solidarity of the broader community played a vital role in advancing this campaign. This strong backing reflects a growing awareness and concern within Australian society regarding the use of the death penalty and ongoing human rights abuses in Iran. The Association expresses its deep appreciation for this support and emphasises the importance of further strengthening these efforts in the months ahead.

As part of its advocacy work, Association delegations also met with representatives from various Australian political parties in mid and late May. These meetings aimed to build greater political support and enhance cooperation in defending human rights in Iran. Discussions highlighted the urgent need for stronger and more decisive positions in response to the continued use of executions.
